Software Heritage Ambassador

Agustín Benito Bethencourt has served as a Software Heritage (SwH) Ambassador since 2023, specifically assigned to the industry vertical. His work focuses on bridging the gap between the mission of preserving the world’s source code and the practical needs of the private sector, particularly regarding software compliance, security, and supply chain management. He frequently presents SwH related content at events and Spain as well as major international gatherings.

A central part of his advocacy involves the Software Hash Identifier (SWHID)—an intrinsinc, ISO standard and persistent identifier for any software artifact, widely used at Software Heritage. Agustín promotes SWHID as a vital tool for achieving the transparency, traceability and provenance required by new regulations such as the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Unlike traditional extrinsic identifiers, SWHID is an intrinsic identifier derived directly from the content of the software itself, which ensures that the same artifact always produces the same unique ID regardless of its storage location or hosting platform. This makes it an essential component for modern Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs), solving persistent industry problems like naming ambiguity and “link rot”.

To help the broader community understand these concepts, Agustín has produced a wealth of educational materials available on his website.
